Educational inequality is an important issue for contemporary sociologists. If we are to have a fair and sustainable society, it is important to ensure that all citizens have equal access to resources such as healthcare and education. Whilst this might sound obvious on many levels, it is harder to achieve in practice than you might think. Human nature being what it is, there is a tendency within society for particular groups to colonise key areas of public life, and mould it to fit their particular needs. This can be carried out at the expense of others. It can happen in various ways, and government policy has tried to address different aspects of this over the years through policies of access and equality.
